Recently we met a wonderful lady who has started a great way to help the local kids have something fun to do this summer. Her name Cathy Fernandes and she has begun a volleyball summer program for school age kids. It is being held in Lake of the Pines and currently serves Lake of the Pines residents. In order to run this program, she has come up with a creative way to raise money: Lake of the Pines t-shirts! Her shirts come in many different designs and are very unique and eye-catching. We were able to have some great Q & A with her recently and wanted to share more about her program:
 1. Hi Cathy, introduce yourself! How did you get into making t-shirts?
Designing t-shirts for the Summer Series Volleyball Program stems from a need to come up with a way to make a program FREE for the kids. T-shirts are a staple that covers all age groups and makes it a perfect item for fundraising. It’s a WIN-WIN! Those who support us not only get a t-shirt to wear… they support the program at the same time.

2. How did the idea for these lake of the pines t-shirts come about?
The concept began when I had to come up with a fundraising idea that would be universal to the area in order to broaden the number of supporters who might be interested. I thought embracing nature and the sports and activities that we enjoy from it, could be the answer. That’s the underlying theme you’ll find when viewing the shirts. Having the background as a Graphic & Website Designer allows me to help facilitate the design and production process.

 3. What is the Summer Series and how is your t-shirt sales benefiting it?
I’m relatively new to Auburn (going on 2 years now) coming from the San Joaquin valley. I observed, in the short time we’ve been here in LOP, that there might be a need for more kids activities in the immediate area. Introducing a volleyball program as summer approached could be a perfect scenario. The kids are out of school for the summer and parents might be looking for a fun activity for them. Volleyball is the type of sport that can be played on so many levels… professional, college, middle/high school and recreational. The game can be played just about anywhere in both social and competitive settings. When kids can learn the basics on how to play, they carry that knowledge and confidence with them.
The shirt fundraiser a way to keep the program FREE for kids in LOP. We plan to sell them year-round and introduce new designs throughout each season.

 4. What is the best way for people to connect with you to purchase/order t-shirts?


We (my husband, Ken, and other volunteers also help out with the program) periodically sell them on the spot here at LOP in various locations. We try to announce these in advance on our website. Another way is to pre-order shirts by going to the “fundraiser” section of our website. There, you can view the designs and place an order. Just go to SummerSeriesVolleyball.com.
