What to plant in January
Strawberries!
Flowers: Plant bare-root roses and vines. Transplant pansies, calendulas, English daisies, violas, snapdragons and fairy primroses.
Fruits and vegetables: Plant rhubarb, bare-root grapes, kiwis, strawberries (!) and cane berries. When weather permits, direct seed peas, radishes, lettuce and spinach. Indoors, start broccoli, kale and collards (yum).
Happy collards in our back yard!
Trees and shrubs: Plant bare root trees and ornamentals. Transplant living Christmas trees outside.
Note: This time of year, soggy soils can rot bare root plants. Don’t dig in wet soil.
