Auburn is the Endurance Capital of the World, home of the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run and the 100 Mile Tevis Cup Trail Ride (a high falutin’ label for a really long horse race). Auburn is also the county seat of Placer County, California.
The population is about 13,000, though it seems bigger to me, kind of spread out. The elevation is about 1200 feet, above the fog and below the snow, as we hillbillies like to say. Auburn’s a good place to live. It is situated about 30 minutes north of Sacramento on Interstate 80 at the Confluence of the north and middle forks of the American River. We always capitalize “Confluence” because we’re proud of it. There are a lot of hiking, running, biking, and riding trails down in the canyon at the Confluence, some great places to picnic, and a couple of secret swimming holes. They’re secret. But . . . I’ll be happy to show you when you come for a look-see.
Drive up the hill an hour and a few minutes (who’s counting) and you’ll find snow at Sugarloaf or Boreal if you’re into skiing, snowboarding, and that sort of thing. Not me. I just scoot on through the pass and get to Tahoe in another half hour, or even better, another half hour to Reno, “Greatest Little City in the World, or so the sign says.
Drive down the hill twenty minutes and you’ll get to Roseville, aka “Shopping Mall City” for the very best that homogenized western culture has to offer.
Or, you can head north along Highway 49 (“Dwelt a Miner, 49er,” get it?) and you’ll come to the sister “cities” of Grass Valley and Nevada City, two of the sweetest little towns you will find anywhere. I spend a lot of time in Grass Valley and Nevada City. But (shhhhh!) more about those secret country “hotspots” in another article.
What I’m saying here is that Auburn is beautifully located near and in between a lot of places you really want to visit. Anything else? Oh yes, the Auburn Symphony is one of the most closely guarded secrets in the foothills. It is really good. I am not making this up.
